NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After a video went viral that showed an officer drawing his weapon at a vehicle, Newport News police spoke to the press to provide more context. The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, May 23, at a City Center parking garage, where officers responded to a gathering of about 30 to 40 cars, according to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew. “The video does show an officer pointing a gun at a dark-colored vehicle,” Drew said. However, Drew and other officials say security footage and officer accounts provide additional context not visible in the viral clip. According to police, a vehicle pulled out and passed closely behind an officer whose back was turned, leaving little time to react. Drew said the officer had about two-tenths of a second to respond and believed he was in danger. “The officer said, ‘I felt like I was about to be hit or run over. I turned, I addressed it, and I ordered that vehicle to stop,’” Drew said. Officials said the tense moment escalated quickly but was resolved just as fast. Drew described an exchange between the officer and the driver that was not captured in the viral video. “He says to the officer, ‘I just want to go home,’ and the officer in the same conversation says to him, ‘I have kids too, and I just want to go home,’” Drew said. Drew added that the interaction reflects the circumstances on both sides of the encounter. “I think these are good kids in our city,” he said. Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Jones said she reviewed the video and believes fear influenced both the officer and the driver. “And I have no doubt from watching the video that the officer was very scared in that moment as well,” Jones said. “Above all else, we focus on our kids.” No injuries were reported. Drew said he has since been in contact with community members, including parents who reached out with concerns about what happened. He said he has spoken with them directly and explained the situation. The chief also said the department is reviewing the incident internally and working with officers to determine what could be improved moving forward, while continuing conversations with the community.

The police then stop her and confirm she is being reported for court over “inappropriate use of horn.” Driver: “You’re taking me to court because I came in from a junction and a male was crossing the road, didn’t look and I beeped… is that correct?” Officer: “Yes.” The officer then reads her the caution before stating: “You’ve been reported for the consideration of prosecution for inappropriate use of horn.” This isn’t a joke. While violent crime, knife attacks, grooming gangs, thefts, and burglaries continue to plague communities across the country, officers are spending time and resources pursuing a woman for sounding her horn at a careless pedestrian. When everyday road users trying to drive safely are being dragged toward court for basic defensive actions, but far more serious offences often go under-policed, the public loses confidence in law enforcement.

Savannah, GA - A Savannah police officer was suspended without pay after an internal investigation into an encounter at Ellis Square. The case drew wider attention after a video of the incident began circulating online, prompting a response from the Savannah Police Department. In a statement shared Monday on Facebook, Police Chief Lenny Gunther said the department had already reviewed the complaint. “We’re aware of the video circulating involving one of our officers and an allegation of improper use of force,” Gunther said. “What’s important for people to know is that while this video is just now making its way around social media, the incident itself happened on March 20.” He said a complaint was filed, an internal investigation was immediately opened, and the inquiry resulted in disciplinary action, including a suspension without pay. Police bodycam shows the moments before and after the use-of-force incident. The officer approach several women as one of them is being placed in handcuffs. The women take issue with the claim that the one in custody is drunk in public. The video shows one of the women briefly putting her hand up, with the officer swatting it away and shoving both women. One of the two women falls completely backwards, with the back of her head coming close to hitting the curb. "She hit my arm, so I shoved her back," the officer is heard saying. "I could arrest her for that." One of the women goes on to ask his name and badge number. Gunther said the case moved through the department’s internal review system as intended. “When our officers fall short of expectations, we take that seriously, and we act,” he said. “Our officers are working in fast-moving, sometimes volatile situations, but that doesn’t change the standard. We hold our people accountable.” He also said the department wants the public to understand there is a formal process for reporting and reviewing complaints against officers. “In this case, that process worked the way it’s supposed to,” Gunther said. The department’s statement did not identify the officer, describe the exact policy violation, or detail the length of the suspension.
