LASD Releases Surveillance Video of a Fatal Shooting After He Kills a Man and Shoots at Deputies
On November 21, 2021, at approximately 1:59 PM, LASD Transit Services Bureau deputies were standing on the street level of the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Metro Rail Station when an unknown Metro Rail patron told them a man had just been shot upstairs at the C-Line platform.
Four deputies responded up the stairway to the east side of platform. As the deputies stepped onto the platform, they immediately saw a male jump down onto the railroad tracks from the south side of the platform. The deputies yelled for him to stop but he did not comply. The male crossed the tracks and picked up a pistol which had fallen out of his pocket as he jumped over the railroad tracks. The male turned toward the deputies, pointed the pistol and fired a single shot at the deputies, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The male was later identified as John Anthony Holenbeck, a 28-year-old male.
Holenbeck was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Deputies immediately began to render first aid to Holenbeck until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, who continued the life-saving efforts. Holenbeck was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Deputies also located David Koliba, a 40-year-old male, lying unresponsive near the west side of the platform. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Koliba dead at the scene. Video surveillance footage revealed Holenbeck followed Koliba up to the C-Line platform from the A-Line platform. As Koliba spoke on his phone awaiting a train, Holenbeck approached him from behind and shot him once in the back of the head. Holenbeck then stayed on the platform until the arrival of deputies.
There were no other persons injured during this incident.
A loaded KelTec .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
